Histology Technologist II PRN
We’re looking for qualified Histology Technologist II like you to join our Texas Health family.

Here’s What You Need
· High School Diploma or Equivalent is required
· Associate degree preferred
· Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, Clinical Lab Science or Chemical, Physical or Biological Science preferred
· HT (ASCP) Histotechnician required within 90 days from hire
· HTL (ASCP) Histotechnologist required within 90 days from hire
· HT Certification is highly preferred
· Strong embedding and cutting experience highly preferred.
Here’s What You Will Do
Specimen Integrity:
· Follows laboratory procedure for specimen collection, handling, and processing.
· Follows established protocols for handling unsatisfactory specimens.
· Accessions surgical and cytology specimens.
Gross Room:
· Specimen Processing
· Surgical Pathology dissection assistance.
· Maintains worksheet, prepare and label tissue cassettes and requisition.
· Knows the proper fixation.
· Stores dissected tissue.
· Loads tissue processor.
· Frozen Section:
· Cuts and stains, thin quality frozen sections within 20 minutes of receipt to pathologic diagnosis.
· Maintains a clean, fresh staining line.
· Uses manual technique to obtain correct HE staining.
· Maintains cryostat according to procedural guidelines.
Test Procedures:
· Embedding
· Orientation of surgical specimen in paraffin.
· Time utilization.
Microtomy:
· Cuts thin, wrinkle free sections.
· Follows protocol for each specimen type and selects appropriate representative sample.
· Time utilization.
· Preparation of Slides and Stains:
· Follows established protocols for staining.
Evaluate stains:
· Operates automated stainer.
· Uses manual staining technique.
· Performs special stains.
· Prepares reagents.
· Operates automated coverslipper.
· Hand coverslipping.
· Routine filing of slides and blocks.
Cytology Specimens:
• Follows established protocols for processing.
• Assists with fine needle aspiration and special procedures.
• Maintains specific quality control.
Reference Lab:
· Follows established protocols for esoteric tests.
· Follows established protocols for extradepartmental consults.
Laboratory Operations:
• Facilitates workflow process.
• Checks outstanding tests list in a timely manner.
• Troubleshoots and follows through on outstanding tests which appear to have not been collected/received when expected.
• Knows and uses computer downtime procedures as needed when computer is not available.
• Gives proper notification when supplies need to be ordered.
• Utilizes time between testing to accomplish other needed tasks. (evaluation of kits, preparing controls, supply management, housekeeping duties, etc).
• Performs tasks in a manner that enhances the quality of care.
• Helps other hospital and laboratory coworkers to provide timely patient care.
• Demonstrates active cost effectiveness.
Professional Accountability:
• Participates in orientation and training of students, volunteers, new employees and observers.
• Maintains commitment to profession by attending continuing education sessions. (Ex. Web seminars, ASCP seminars, Tarleton and Lab sponsored seminars by industry.)
• Completes mandatory hospital/laboratory education and departmental competencies within required time frame.
• Mandatory health requirements are completed with required time frame.
• Completes assigned work within required time and offers assistance to other coworkers.
• Uses laboratory equipment (computer, instruments, etc) for hospital use only.
• Budgets and schedules PTO for effective staffing levels.
• Time and attendance is satisfactory.
• Employee exhibits a professional appearance.
• Seeks assistance/supervision/consultation as needed and reports to supervisor any problems and/or solution regarding delivery of patient care.
• Interacts professionally and pleasantly with all encountered and promotes customer satisfaction.
Quality Control/Documentation:
• Demonstrates understanding of quality control guidelines.
• Documents quality control utilizing appropriate methods.
• Follows Laboratory policies when quality control is not within established limits.
• Resolves quality control discrepancies before releasing/reporting patient results.
• Documents corrective action.
• Performs and documents laboratory equipment maintenance protocols within established time limits.
• Demonstrates knowledge to troubleshoot equipment.
Safety:
• Protective safety equipment and engineering controls are utilized as required.
• Work area is clean and neat.
• Patient confidentiality is not compromised.
• Unsafe conditions are report to appropriate personnel.
• Patient situations, on-the-job injuries, and medical device malfunctions are reported accurately and in a timely manner using the reliability learning tool.
