Why I am a Certified Nurse: Rosemarie Anthony
Texas Health provides a standardized process for bonus payments and exam fee reimbursements for registered nurses who achieve a national nursing certification. Rosemarie Anthony, R.N., IBCLC, maternal child/lactation, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne, shares why she became a certified nurse.
What inspired you to become a nurse? Having a heart to serve and help people is what inspired me to become a nurse.
What do you enjoy about being a nurse? What I enjoy about nursing is the opportunity to make a positive impact, health wise, in the lives of others. Through example and education, my desire is to help people rise higher and experience the abundant life that God intends for us all.
Why did you decide to get certified? I am an international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC). My first child was born in 1987 at Texas Health Cleburne, and that was my first experience with breastfeeding. I researched the benefits and decided I wanted my baby to experience ALL the benefits that breastmilk had to offer. In 1988, I began working in the OB department here at Texas Health Cleburne and loved all the areas that I worked in, especially postpartum. It was primarily in this area that I could readily educate and help my mommas breastfeed their babies. I realized that this one act alone would benefit and positively impact their baby’s health for many years to come. I became the nurse that my peers would call when a momma experienced a breastfeeding challenge. Several years later I became a certified breastfeeding educator. A few years later, I chose to become board certified as a lactation consultant because I had the opportunity to not only learn more but provide credibility to my role.

Did you face any challenges in becoming certified and how did you overcome them? In the midst of pursuing the requirements to become IBCLC certified, my daughter was born. She became my priority in that season. Upon returning back to work part time, I re-committed my time to pursuing my dream of IBCLC certification. I have learned that setting a goal is easy; however, reaching a goal requires desire, focus and determination.
Why do you think it is important to pursue specialty certification? I believe that it is important for nurses to pursue a specialty certification because it gives them the opportunity to become more knowledgeable in their area of interest, which then is often reflected in the care the patient receives. Specialty certifications also provide credibility to nurses’ role as healthcare providers.
