‘The Power To Transform Human Lives’

What’s your why?

Reminding ourselves of the meaning, or “why,” behind our work can help us build resilience and beat burnout. Consider your “why” as you read through comments from Texas Health Resources team members on why they keep going.

“One of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis, wrote, ‘You have never met an ordinary person.’ I love that quote because it reminds me that no one is ordinary, and anyone I cross paths with is an eternal soul. I became a nurse because helping others fuels me, and it seems like sacred work to me. I believe the work we do every day has the power to transform human lives and experiences. That feels like a rare privilege to me. I get an opportunity to learn and be a part of someone else’s story in a tangible way. I keep going because those around me at work help strengthen me unknowingly, just by me watching them walk their own paths with such courage. When we choose not to allow the darkness to overcome the light in us, the darkness begins to lose its power.”

“‘Why not?’ rather than ‘why’ is the question I ask myself. Behind the scenes, I help make a collaborative contribution to patient care and treatment. I keep going because I enjoy working with the brilliant and witty team that I’m blessed to work with.”

“Like most healthcare workers, I feel that my why is to help and serve others. Striving to make a positive difference in the lives of my patients and co-workers is why I do what I do. Taking advantage of the Texas Health Resources wellness platform, Virgin Pulse, has helped me to worry less about the things I cannot change and to focus on staying positive when life throws curves at me and to welcome change as an opportunity to grow. Growing up in north Arlington, it is not unusual for me to run into an old neighbor or friend here. My mother worked here as a nurse when the original ICU opened, and my children were born here as well. Giving back to this community and helping improve the health of our patients keeps me going.”

“I view nursing not just as a profession but as an opportunity to help people through some of the most joyous and most vulnerable moments of their lives. The ability to connect with other people who are strangers to you in a meaningful way keeps me motivated. Seeing smiles on patients’ faces is what keeps me going.”

Lorretta Obi, B.S.N., R.N., CMSRN, medical-surgical
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne

“Patient safety is the foundation of high-quality healthcare. My role is critical to the surveillance and coordination to reduce adverse care outcomes. I want to make a difference by identifying opportunities for improvement to keep all patients safe. I want to influence a culture of safe patient care. I am a seasoned nurse with a solid clinical background and wish to aid Texas Health Fort Worth in learning from safety events and near misses to protect our patients from harm and unsafe acts. I feel blessed to work for a great company and am thankful I have spent 20 years of my career here.”
