Pharmacy apprenticeships return

Two ‘earn and learn’ cohorts planned for spring and fall 2023

Positions for 11 new pharmacy technician apprenticeships will post Feb. 17.

Why it matters: The program helps both individual employees and the system as a whole. The apprentices receive six weeks of paid tuition and a full-time job. The graduates help alleviate a systemwide shortage of techs.

Twenty-two new tech apprentices graduated from the first two classes and filled hospital pharmacy technician positions, said Bianca Randall, M.H.A., director of Pharmacy Operations. One of them, Hunter Baker, had previously worked at the U.S. Postal Service and UPS. “I came into the program with absolutely no experience, but the curriculum allowed me to succeed,” he said.

The apprentices become techs after passing a certification board exam. Techs assist pharmacists with tasks including filling prescriptions, making intravenous solutions, data entry, delivering medications to hospital units, inventory management and ordering medications from vendors.

The program is a collaboration between Texas Health Resources University and Pharmacy.

The need for more techs is ongoing
