Mural wows with medication caps

From cross-stitching and crocheting to making wreaths and sewing gifts, Mindy Hamilton, R.N., Texas Health Dallas, has been crafting since she was very young.

“My grandmother’s next-door neighbor taught me how to crochet when I was 7, and the rest is history,” said Mindy with a laugh.

Mindy’s talent has come a long way since her first, simple crochet pieces. Three-and-a-half years in the making, she recently completed her greatest masterpiece.

Hoping to create a conversation piece for employees and patients, Mindy set out to make a mural using medication caps from her unit, Main 6 East. The idea turned into a much bigger project than she had anticipated; for more than two years, Mindy and her co-workers collected medication caps for the artwork.

“Everyone contributed by saving their ‘trash,'” said Mindy. “We had a bag in our medication room that everyone dropped their contributions into.”

Once she had collected approximately 20,000 medication caps, Mindy spent a year and a half – plus eight very large bottles of glue – creating the mural. She glued each cap individually in a craft room at her home. The mural hangs in Main 6 East but will also travel to other areas of the hospital for display.

“I had no idea this would turn into such a big spectacle,” said Mindy. “It was a group project from start to finish, and I think it’s a testament to how well we work together here on Main 6 East.”
