Here’s What You Need
· Associate’s degree in health information services or related field required or
· Highschool Diploma or equivalent and 2 years of coding experience in lieu of degree required
· 2 years coding in an acute care setting required
· 1 year performing coding and documentation audits preferred
· RHIA upon hire required or
· RHIT upon hire required or
· CCS upon hire required or
· COC upon hire required or
· CMA upon hire required
What You Will Do
Audits documentation and validates the accuracy of diagnosis and procedure coding for accurate reporting and medical necessity. Collaborates with outpatient coders, coding educator, entity and system staff, i.e. quality, to improve documentation. Completes all outpatient prebill holds associated with achieving the weekly unbilled goals.
Performs audits of medical records and validates assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes:
• Assesses accuracy of principal diagnosis, PCS, CPT and APC assignment.
• Confirms appropriate coding and sequencing of pertinent secondary diagnoses and procedures.
• Confirms coding of all diagnoses required to validate medical necessity.
• Distributes audit results to coders and coordinates rebuttal and rebill processes with coder and business office.
• Communicates with supervisor and/or manager any issues arising from audit results and coding communications.
• Assists as needed with outpatient coder onboarding.
Assists leadership in organizational improvement efforts:
• Provides feedback to employee on identified issues found during record review with supportive documentation as needed.
Serves as subject matter expert:
• Completes all system services required training and education in a timely manner.
• Completes education as assigned by the Education and Coding Quality team.
• Serves as a knowledge expert in the areas of documentation, ICD-10-CM and PCS, CPT-4, APC, HCPCS, and modifiers.
Professional accountability:
• Consistently abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set by AHIMA and adheres to official coding guidelines.
• Stays current on coding guidelines as published in Coding Clinic, CMS guidelines, CPT Assistant, etc.
