Texas Health Physicians Group APP
Did you know Texas Health Physicians Group (THPG) currently has more than 370 advanced practice providers (APPs) working throughout THPG in both specialty and primary care practices? At THPG, they make up about 37 percent of our providers and work in both hospitals and clinics, in both rural and urban settings. They are essential in helping us to continue providing a reliable, quality experience for our patients, whether conducting physical exams, counseling patients on preventive health care or performing post-acute care. But don’t just take our word for it, read on to learn more about Jennifer Rodges, co-chair of the APP Advisory Group.
Family Nurse Practitioner at Gatehouse Medical Care
Jennifer Rodges, F.N.P.
What did you want to be as a kid and how did you ultimately choose your career/job?
I first wanted to be an algebra teacher or engineer because I loved math. Then I started to get interested in biology and science and considered medical school, but that was not financially possible. So, I went to nursing school and loved it! After working as an R.N. for three years, I decided to return to school to further my education.
What is your favorite moment/experience at Texas Health?
I started my career with a Texas Health Resources’ foundation clinic working with women and children in need. I truly enjoy being able to educate and empower these women on self-care and making their health a priority, so they can be healthy, active, and a great parent.
What is the biggest challenge of your work?
Since being with THPG and working for a foundation clinic, I have had to learn to be flexible and to work in other capacities and roles, such as nursing home provider, operations/quality with the Medical Assistant Proficiency Program (MAPP) department. In addition, I am now practicing two days a week in another THPG family practice along with my three days a week with the Gatehouse Clinic.
What do you do when you’re not at work?
I spend time with my husband, two adult children and two dogs. We love to go wake surfing at the lake, exercise and travel.
What best practices have you (or your practice) implemented to improve efficiency?
I work at educating my patients to improve vaccination rates and mammogram screenings.
What new and different things is your practice doing to support our Consumer Focus?
We are staying flexible and working in different roles so that we can continue to provide excellent patient care wherever and whenever it is needed.
