Unsung Heroes: Ted Menard, Director of Pharmacy

Compounding medicine, readying medical supplies, verifying orders and fulfilling employee prescriptions usually fills the days of Ted Menard, director of pharmacy, and his team of pharmacists in the Texas Health Infusion Pharmacy in east Fort Worth.

But when Randy Ball, vice president and system pharmacy officer for Texas Health, needed hand sanitizer recently donated by a local distillery rebottled, Menard, soon found himself filling an additional role.

“My vice president had 2,000 bottles to fill and needed it done by the end of the day,” Ted said. “You could say I volunteered.”

Ted suspected he could tackle the job in four hours.

In reality, he said, it took eight hours and the help of multiple people, including two pharmacy techs and an analyst.

Ted said the team set up about 100 one-ounce plastic bottles at a time. The bottles were filled using two Repeater Pumps that normally transfer liquids into IVs, then capped. The team then placed the bottles into a large bin until they could be packed neatly into boxes for transport to the hospitals.

“It was a time-consuming task but one that my colleagues and I were happy to step up and fill,” Ted said. “We’re all in this together.”
