Brittany Monene, a self-proclaimed bookworm, loves a good story.
When she began thinking about her future, she had a mystery on her hands. She wanted to find the perfect formula for helping people and solving problems. Luckily, a family friend gave her a glimpse of the possibilities in healthcare.
“Healthcare was not on my radar, but when I walked into the pharmacy, everything started to click. I could see how the teamwork and processes would lead to good outcomes and that solidified it for me,” said Monene, Pharm.D., BCPS, who is a pharmacy lead at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound.

“Brittany’s excellent work and relentless focus on patient safety elevates the entire pharmacy. Her communication with physicians, nurses and ancillary departments helps us achieve better overall outcomes for our patients,” said Gurbinder Jassar, Pharm.D., MS, BCSCP, FACHE, director of pharmacy at Texas Health Flower Mound.

What did you want to be as a kid, and how did you choose your career?
As a kid, I loved science projects and asking way too many “why” questions. I was first introduced to the pharmacy world by shadowing a family friend at her independent community pharmacy. Ultimately, I was drawn to pharmacy because it blends science, critical thinking and patient safety. Over time, I realized I also had a strong interest in systems, leadership and improving how care is delivered.
What does a typical workday look like?
No two days are exactly the same, which is something I genuinely enjoy. Most days include collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, reviewing workflows and supporting our pharmacy staff. I also troubleshoot anything related to safety, compliance, controlled-substance discrepancies or formulary issues. A big part of my role is problem-solving and making sure processes not only protect patients but also support employees.
What’s your favorite part of your job, and the biggest challenge?
My favorite part of my job is seeing how my work behind the scenes directly improves patient care and can make a meaningful difference in other care team members’ daily work. It’s work that most people don’t notice, but it’s incredibly rewarding. The biggest challenge is balancing competing priorities while still making thoughtful and sustainable decisions. There’s always more to do, but I try to stay grounded in what will have the best long-term impact.
What’s something most people might not know about you?
I’ve always been a proud book nerd. I did Battle of the Books as a kid, and that love of reading never went away. When I’m not at work, I’m usually working my way through a new novel on my Kindle. I’m also in four book clubs, because one just isn’t enough!
What are some of the ways you strive to serve patients and employees?
I focus on creating systems that are safe, efficient and supportive. For patients, that means advocating for medication safety and reliable processes. For employees, it means listening and removing barriers, if feasible. I also like helping to create an environment where people feel valued, supported and empowered to do their life’s best work.
