NCAP Spotlight: Gaizkane De Carvalho

Having lived in Ireland and Argentina – and with family in Spain – Gaizkane De Carvalho, B.S.N., R.N., PCCN, says COVID-19 travel restrictions have been challenging. However, this world traveler has found strength in the roots she has grown at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton. De Carvalho has been with the hospital for nine years and is an NCAP (Nursing Career Advancement Program) Level V nurse.

She joined NCAP in 2016 after encouragement from a colleague.

“I really like being a part of changes and making improvements to our practice,” De Carvalho said. “Plus, I was already involved in activities that met the program requirements, such as serving on my unit-based council and a few other committees.”

NCAP recognizes and financially rewards nurses for their dedication to their hospital, profession and education. Nurses advance levels in the program through a variety of professional development activities.

De Carvalho served in the cardiovascular unit at Texas Health Denton before moving to become an electrophysiology and cardiac lab nurse a year and a half ago.

“I love this work,” she said. “At the bedside it’s ‘go, go, go,’ but here it is more controlled.”

To advance to become an NCAP Level V nurse, De Carvalho has participated in a number of activities, including providing unit education and serving as a member of the Nursing Professional Practice Committee.

“Nurses have a voice,” she said. “By becoming proactive and getting involved, we can effect change in our profession.”
