Fellows Make Their Mark

Eight Texas Health Resources clinicians placed among the top 12 graduates of the TCU Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship. During the Sept. 22 virtual graduation, Texas Health clinicians swept the top three awards for posters, received an award for an abstract and won two of the prestigious Impact Awards presented to former fellows.

The yearlong fellowship brings together diverse health care practitioners to learn about research, evidence and measurement.

Poster winners recognized at the graduation were:

  • Gold: First Place – Amynah Juma, B.S.N., R.N., RNC-NIC, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, “The Impact of Education on Nurse-Patient Communication”
  • Silver: Second Place – Mindy Hickman, physical therapist, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth, “Decreasing Use of External Urinary Catheters in Ambulatory Patients on Med/Surg Unit”
  • Bronze: Third Place – Demitris Smoczkiewicz, M.S., SM(ASCP)CM, CIC, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, “We are the Champions! Utilizing Unit Champions for CLABSI Reduction Interventions”

Hickman also received third place for her abstract on her project.

In addition, two former fellows received the Impact Award for the sustained impact of their work:

  • Darla Eubank, B.S.N., R.N., CRNO, Texas Health Dallas, 2017-2018 fellowship cohort, “Mindful of Midlines: A Safe & Effective Vascular Access Device”
