CBS 11 features nurses’ work

Nurses are helping identify human trafficking victims in the Emergency Department at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hurst-Euless-Bedford.

“Ninety-five percent of all emergency staff across the country have not received any sort of training on human trafficking,” said Susan Blume, an ED nurse at Texas Health HEB. That’s why Blume decided to teach a class at the hospital to educate ED staff and social workers about screening for victims of human trafficking.

From June 2018 through May 2019, Texas Health HEB has screened 189 patients at high risk for human trafficking. Five were confirmed and two sought help.

CBS 11 recently spoke with Blume and ED nurse Beth Stewart about their experiences and how they use a screening tool to help victims. Watch the full story here.
