New NICU welcomes families

To better care for our tiniest patients, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth recently renovated its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and doubled its capacity.

“The expanded NICU will decrease transfers so that more mothers and babies can stay together, closer to home,” said Darryl Miao, M.D., medical director and a physician on the medical staff.

The new space also includes bedside milk refrigerators and three isolation rooms. An in-unit “rooming in” room allows parents to spend the night with their infant before discharge, giving parents the chance to experience caring for their child on their own, with the security of caregivers close by.

“Parents love the new unit,” said Cathy Johnson, M.S.N., R.N., NEA-BC, director of Women and Infants. “They really appreciate all the windows, especially those that overlook the Horchler Meditation Garden.

Designed with input from consumers, physicians and nurses, the second-floor unit incorporates a warm color palette and an abundance of natural light. Labor & Delivery is in the process of being refreshed, as well, Cathy said.

The NICU project was in the works for several years, said Becky Tucker, hospital president.

“We put a lot of thought into every aspect of the renovations, to make the space as comfortable and inviting as possible for parents,” Becky said. “It was definitely a labor of love.”
