Selina Leewright, Nursing Operations

Selina Leewright, B.S.N., R.N., CCRN, is an administrative nursing supervisor at Texas Health Fort Worth. She has worked at Texas Health for 13.5 years.

What did you want to be as a kid and how did you ultimately choose your career/job?

As a kid I wanted to be a fashion or interior designer. I ultimately chose nursing as a career after my daughter was born. I was impressed with the nursing staff because they embodied qualities that were important to me: compassion and clinical expertise.

What is a typical workday like for you?

Our role is unique in that it is clinical and administrative. Our main function is to facilitate patient throughput, but it is much more than that. I like to think of our department as the ‘Olivia Pope’ of the hospital — we are the master problem solvers. A typical day might look something like this: log 15,000 steps; help deliver a baby in the parking lot; place patients in the ICU settings; determine staffing for the units; respond to code blues/rapid responses; function as the employee health/patient advocate after hours; lend an ear to a frustrated patient, nurse, physician on the medical staff or visitor; wipe a tear; give a hug; start an IV; call the fire department for a car on fire in the parking garage; facilitate patient transfers in/out of our hospital; initiate a hospital capacity plan. (Whew-I think you get the picture!!)

What is the biggest challenge of your work?

There’s not enough of us to go around!

What do you like most about being a nurse at Texas Health?

I enjoy being part of a team that strives for excellence.

What do you do when you’re not at work?

Right now, I am in graduate school pursuing my AG-ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner) degree, so in my off time I am usually studying or spending time with my daughter.

What’s one thing most people might not know about you?

I used to work as an interior design consultant and flight attendant!

How do you strive to live Our Texas Health PromiseSM?

It’s pretty simple: Treat people with respect.
