More than five decades of caring for others

Jacqueline Robertson has been working at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas for 55 years in all, a stretch she attributes to a promise she made to God.

She started at the day care center in 1971, left on maternity leave and returned in 1976, when she was offered her current position: anesthesia technician.

Robertson said she once thought about quitting but had a spiritual moment that left her in tears and certain that God wanted her to keep working.

“I had promised the Lord I would keep working if he gave me a job, and when you promise the Lord something, you have to do what you promised,” she said. “You know, you’ve got to serve somewhere, so I’m just going to stay right here.”

She added, “Our hands are blessed. ‘Whatever you put your hands to do, work unto the Lord.’”

Robertson had worked at the day care center for five years before taking leave to have her third child.  She returned hoping to pursue a position as a licensed vocational nurse. Instead, she was offered her current position.

Anesthesia Supervisor Scott LaLonde, AT, said, “Jackie continues to be one of the most dedicated employees at Texas Health Dallas. Her tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment to compassionate patient care set an example for all of us.”

Robertson has enjoyed the many changes she’s seen in healthcare, including learning how to use computers. She’s also a big fan of Our Texas Health Promise Principles: safe, reliable, proactive, caring, seamless and efficient.

“If a family is looking for directions, you stop what you’re doing and politely take time to help them. I thank God that’s what we’re all about, helping hands and caring hearts.”

When people ask when she’s going to retire, Robertson said she responds, “When the Lord tells me to.”
