At Texas Health Southwest and Clearfork’s 2024 Nursing Olympics

The Summer Olympics are in full swing today – both in Paris and at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth.

The 2024 Nursing Olympics at Texas Health Southwest and Texas Health Hospital Clearfork, a department of Texas Health Southwest, are all about going over standards and procedures to provide excellent care in preparation for an upcoming visit from The Joint Commission, said Lori Donovan, M.S.N., R.N., CNOR, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer.

The units are all competitors in the Nursing Olympics.

“The team at Texas Health Southwest/Texas Health Clearfork wanted a creative way to engage the staff to review The Joint Commission standards and performance,” Donovan said. “We felt the Olympic theme would be a fun way to create excitement and cross check our practices.”

Clinical procedures are matched up with Olympic events over the two weeks ending Aug. 9. For example, the marathon is pain assessment/reassessment, while the squash event is suicide risk assessment. Cycling covers p.m. checks and expired supplies, archery is blood transfusions, surfing is environment of care.

Many more events are scheduled, some for individual units and others for groups, in which units with the highest percentage of attendance earn medals.

Ajith Pai, hospital president, and Lori Donovan, chief nursing officer, lead opening ceremonies on Friday.

Leslie Peloquin, representing the ICU, stands with the Olympic torch.
