Our Critical Care Units are located in the Hamon Tower, the largest expansion in the hospital’s history which opened in 2009. The new medical complex is devoted to intensive care for the region’s most critically ill patients. Our intensivist program puts the care of ICU patients under the guidance of board-certified critical care physicians, who directly oversee patient care in the ICU throughout the day. Physicians are available 24 hours. Critical care nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants — all trained in critical care medicine — help provide care in the ICU around the clock.

Our Critical Care Units include:

Medical Intensive Care Unit - a 18 bed unit provides acute care to primarily adult and geriatric, cardiac, medical, and/or select surgical patients.  Occasionally high-risk OB patients, pre/post-delivery experiencing a medical crisis, will receive care in collaboration with the OB Department staff. Acute care provided includes intravenous medication therapy, hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator therapy, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) monitoring, impella monitoring, external corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy, medication therapy, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), internal and external pacing, emergent cardioversion, and general medical surgical treatments.  The MICU works with a dedicated critical care intensivist team that provide 24/7 coverage to all patients

Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit – a 24 bed acute care ICU which houses a combination of Cardiovascular Surgery, Neuroscience Surgery, and Trauma. The Cardiovascular Surgery population consists of post-operative open heart (CABG/Valve surgery/complex Cath Lab procedure requiring higher level of care), thoracic abdominal repairs, and vascular surgical patients. Our Neuroscience patients include post-operative craniotomy/craniectomy, general neuroscience patients, aneurysm and post-TPA patients for stroke. THD is a comprehensive stroke center that also cares for neuro-radiological intervention patients which includes mechanical clot retrieval, aneurysm clipping, and angiograms. We care for a wide variety of trauma patients and are currently working to achieve Level I designation
