Marcial Pimentel, B.S.N., R.N., WCC

Wound Care Manager

Texas Health HEB

What does your typical workday look like?

I come in at 7:30 a.m. and join my nursing team for a quick huddle to discuss the workday. I help out on the floor for at least the first couple of hours, until I have to do some office work, attend meetings, conference calls, etc. If not, I stay on the floor, trying to help move patients. Then after lunch, I go back to the floor to help out or to my office if we don't need help. By 5 or 5:30 p.m., we end clinic, have a little informal end-of-day huddle to talk about what went wrong, what can be improved, etc. Then we go home.

What is the biggest challenge of your work?

The biggest challenge of my work is to implement new or existing policies among my nursing staff since they are used to doing things a certain way that they deem effective for them. I am very blessed to have a very talented and motivated staff.

What do you love most about your new job here at Texas Health HEB?

I felt welcome even before I was hired, during the interview process. Texas Health HEB has trained employees and management to give us every chance to succeed.  So, the Texas Health system is one of the things that I can say I love. I've always been in wound care, since the beginning of my nursing career, so this job is not entirely new. I still have the same passion for my job as before, and the reason has not changed. Seeing the smile on patients' faces when they are finally healed is incomparable to anything else, and knowing that we, as a team including the patient, have worked hard to achieve this goal makes it much more rewarding.

What do you do when you're not at work?

Try to unpack and fix my home. We just bought a house. I did not realize that it was just the beginning of what seems like a never-ending project.

Tell us about your loved ones.

My immediate family is in the Philippines. My wife and I are the only ones living here, so I guess I have to talk about her. I love my wife and have been with her more than half of my life. She is my best friend and my travel buddy. She literally is the better half.
