Qualifications/Duties:
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen is seeking a Surgical Tech in the Surgery Department

The Surgery Department has 5 OR suites, 1 GI procedure room,  and 1 Cysto procedure room.

Procedures Include:
Orthopedic, Ortho Spine, General, GYN, Robotic (General/GYN), Plastic, Urology, Pain Management, GI lab

Operating Devices:
DaVinci Si robot, O-Arm, Hana Table, and Trios Table

QUALIFICATIONS:

Full Time: 40 hours per week
Variable shifts - 2 (12 hour shifts) and 2 (8 hour shifts)
Rotating call required

Minimum Education Required:
Graduate of an accredited surgical technician degree program.

Minimum Licensure/Certifications Required:  
Must have current surgical technician certification by NBSTSA, NCCT or certification program approved by TDSHS within 2 years of hire date.  BCLS current upon hire.

Minimum Skills Required:  
A high degree of confidentiality, positive interpersonal skills, and ability to function in a fast-paced environment; knowledge of surgical technology.

JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nursing Process
Assists in providing peri-operative care for a patient population that includes Infants, Pediatrics, Adults, and Geriatrics.  Preoperatively assists R.N. circulator in formulating plan of care.   

• Supplies and equipment are assembled, prepared, and checked for proper functioning in respect to the needs of the patient and surgeon.
• Room is ready  or patient and scheduled on time start.
• A well developed surgical conscience and aseptic technique is displayed.
• Sterile items are opened correctly and instruments are checked for completeness and function.
• Counts are performed according to policy.
• Expertise in scrubbing, gowning and gloving is displayed.
• Surgeons preference cards are thoroughly reviewed prior to procedure.
• Enough time is allowed to scrub and set up prior to procedure.
• Knowledgeable of principles of sterilization; correctly operates autoclaves.
• Cases are pulled accurately per doctor’s preference cards.
• Under supervision assist R.N. circulator with preoperative duties.

Intra - Operating Room Responsibilities
Intra-operatively displays skills and behavior conducive to desirable outcome.  

• Instrumentation is handled during basic to complex surgical procedures with proficiency in multiple services.
• Surgeons needs are anticipated.
• The ability to respond to procedure variations is shown.
• Specimens are handled correctly.
• The sterile field is monitored and maintained in a manner that minimizes the risk of transfer of infection and accidental contamination.
• Good communication skills are displayed with circulator/surgeon.
• Medications are properly identified on sterile field per policy.
• Under supervision assists RN with intra-operative duties.
 
Post Operating Responsibilities
Post-operatively follows proper procedures for care of instruments, supplies and equipment.  Under supervision, assists RN circulator with post-operative duties.  

• Instruments are handled with care.
• Concerns and/or special handling are communicated as necessary to instrument room personnel.
• Supplies and equipment are returned to designated storage.
• Room turnover is timely and effective.
• Preference cards are updated and changes initialed as new techniques are instituted.
• Sharps are handled and disposed of properly.

Infection Control
Assists in the delivering of nursing care in a manner that minimizes the risk of transfer of infection and accidental contamination.  

• Hand washing is frequent and appropriate.
• Appropriate PPE is used when exposed to potentially infectious materials.
• Blood, specimens, body fluids, and patient contact items are handled as potentially infectious materials.
• Linen and trash are handled according to departmental policies and infection control guidelines
• Breaks in technique are recognized and corrected.
• Ancillary personnel are supervised and taught compliance in keeping a safe and aseptic environment.
• Departmental dress code is adhered to.
• Inappropriately attired individuals are recognized and prohibited from entering the OR.
• Proper cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and equipment are assured.
• During surgical intervention the surgical field and its components remain sterile.
• Safety, infection control, and hazardous communication programs/policies are compiled with.      

Safety
Assists in delivering patient care in a manner which protects the patient from injury.  

• Patient care is delivered in a manner which protects the patient from injury ie. transported, positioned, padded, secured, and grounded properly.
• Equipment is operated according to manufacturer's instructions.
• Equipment malfunctions are reported appropriately
• Laser safety guidelines are adhered to.
• Alarms on patient care devices are not silenced or set inappropriately
• Procedure for time-out, including confirmation of correct patient, correct site, correct procedure, equipment and implant is performed.
• Patient is protected from improper use storage of electrocautery equipment.
• Medications are delivered and identified on the surgical field appropriately and applicable identifiers used prior to administering per policy.

Continuous Improvement
Care is provided with an emphasis on continually improving quality, service, and cost effectiveness.   

• Surgeon preference cards are updated and changes are initiated as new techniques are instituted.
• Ineffective and costly processes are identified and action is taken to improve those processes.
• Continually strives to improve customer satisfaction.
• Actively participates in helping the OR meet its goals.
• Supplies and time are used judiciously.
• Potential quality problems, ie. deviation from standards of care, are identified.
